The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a new Three-Language Formula for students of Classes 9 and 10, which will come into effect from 1st July 2026. The revised framework has been prepared in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
Under the new policy, students will have to study a minimum of three languages during secondary education. Out of these three languages, at least two must be Indian languages. CBSE has also clarified that there will be no separate board examination for the third language, bringing major relief to students and parents.
CBSE Clarifies No Board Exam for Third Language
One of the biggest highlights of the new policy is that the third language will not have an external CBSE board examination. Instead, schools themselves will conduct internal assessments for language evaluation.
However, students will still have to qualify in the internal assessment process to receive their final secondary school certificate. The marks obtained in the assessment will be included in the final CBSE certificate.
According to the board, this system is designed to reduce exam pressure while promoting multilingual learning among students.
CBSE Three-Language Formula 2026
The board has categorized the language framework into three parts — R1, R2, and R3.
R1 (First Language)
This will be the primary academic language selected by the student or school, such as English or Hindi.
R2 (Second Language)
The second language must be completely different from the first language chosen in R1.
R3 (Third Language)
The third language must also be different from both R1 and R2. CBSE has made it mandatory that at least two out of the three selected languages should be Indian languages.
